In film
- comic adaptations continue to kick ass at the box office, owning 2 of the top 3 spots. Iron Man 3 had come out shortly before the last post and, riding the wave of awesome created by The Avengers, took in almost half a billion (that's with a "B") dollars at the time of this post and barring some act of God/Allah/Zeus, will remain the highest grossing movie of the year. Zack Snyder (Watchmen) moved his interpretation of the boy from Krypton close to the top of the heap with Man of Steel, a grittier and in my opinion, more honest albeit flawed look at the Superman mythology. [Insert S-Man-snapping-Zod's-neck-GIF here] Oh yeah...that happened.
- The sequels just won's stop. Some of the more notable sequels to come out since the last post have been The Wolverine, yet another appearance by Hugh Jackman as the mutant that just won't die but IS starting to look a little long in the tooth. Kick-Ass 2 came out to controversy due to star Jim Carrey's sudden change of heart concerning the movie's level of violence in light of the Sandy Hooks school shooting. It's funny he felt justified for criticizing the movie but he still cashed the check he received making it. It came out, critics weren't thrilled, audiences helped it recoup the costs, let's move on. Most recently (this last weekend actually), we saw the release of the next step in Marvel Entertainments plans for global domination of the box office, Thor: The Dark World. While it hasn't played out as well so far as Iron Man 3, it has been well-received by fan and, to a certain degree, critics. And in the interest of equal time, Red 2 came out. I saw the first one on DVD, it was ok. Maybe I'll see this one on DVD too. I'm not making any promises.
In literature
I have no idea. I had absolutely no time to even crack a book open let alone scour the interweb and brick-and-mortar venues to check out what's new and hot. Sorry. :-(In video/tabletop gaming entertainment
See literature. Otherwise, here is the link to an article regarding highly anticipated games from the summer of 2013. The one that no one seems to stop talking about thought is Grand Theft Auto V. I've heard good things.
In fandom
- As is every year, the summer is full of conventions for every interest and discipline. SDCC was HUGE again this year. So huge, in fact, that a good friend of mine suffered system failure on the part of the venue's ticket sales provider and lost his place in the queue and ultimately, his chance to attend the venerated Geek event. Sorry, Mark. There's always next year. ;-)
- An honorable mention goes out to ABC for premiering Marvel's Agents of Shield. This show Kicks ass. (You'll notice I used a capital K, it kicks that much ass.) Agent Coulson is back from Tahiti and looking for company. Joss Whedon produces and even directed the pilot episode. I have a MAJOR man crush on Joss Whedon. One of the gimmicks of this show, aside from the fact that it's awesome it that is uses the "stay through the credits" ploy of throwing surprises at you right before it goes off the air. WAS THAT SAMMY L.? Holy sh*t! Cameos up the pie-hole on top of a well-written, well-produced television show that's on a broadcast network! What are the chances?
- Team Unicorn deserves a place of prestige in the Halls of Geek Awesomeness. One because they're all drop-dead gorgeous, well-versed, highly-active members of the "community" and also because they put out kick-ass content like this Wonder Woman fan trailer. A special shout out to Rileah Vanderbilt for filling (very well, BTW of the Amazonian hottie/ball-buster. Ladies, anytime you are looking for an open forum for your cause/work, I'm happy to oblige. Not to disappoint, here's the trailer:
With that, I will take my leave of you. I promise to not let another six months go between posts, whether you like it or not. You can join the FBUU on Facebook and look for more posts here as I make them available. Thanks for joining and remember, never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line!
Cheers!
